Mother’s Day is the best commemorative day, and the worst. “There he goes again,” you think. “Contradicting himself.” Allow me to explain. The Good I think it is great that we have a day to remember our mums, and all that they’ve done for us, and all that we owe them. It’s great that we have this annual reminder to acknowledge the person who is arguably the most important person in our lives. And to double down on our efforts to make her happy. The Bad But it’s horrible if, like in many people’s cases, it’s the ONLY reminder. In that case, Mother’s Day is just the worst. You know the type I’m talking about. They are the ones who live their lives as if mum does not exist. They live out their busy lives, making a name for themselves in the world, jet setting, wheeling and dealing, and basically climbing the golden ladder. As for the poor Aged P, she must content with a life of solitude in an old-aged home somewhere. And then, come Mother’s Day or a birthday, the lonely matriarch is sent a commemorative, gift and a card. And if she’s truly lucky, she might even be blessed with a visit from her successful and high profile offspring. The Ugly And then there are the worst type: those who are outright mean to their mums. I had a horrible experience once in a restaurant where a mum told her teenager to put her phone away and to spend time with the family, only to be verbally abused by the brat. I was horrified. The mum saw me looking, and I could see the hurt and embarrassment in her eyes. I really didn’t know what to do at that point. I just looked back down at my meal. Breeding monsters Do we live in a society that shuns or encourages that kind of behaviour? Are our kids taught to love and respect their parents no matter what, or are they taught to “deconstruct” and “rethink” such traditional relationships? I think if one had to look at today’s entertainment industry, the answer will be quite evident. From movies to series to music, we celebrate the rebels, those who shun traditional values live life by their own rules. We are taught that traditional values, relationships and social hierarchies are an anachronism, something that is from the stone ages. I understand that many of the above have been problematic any many cases, but I ask you: why go to extremes? Why do we discard EVERYTHING when SOME things are problematic? And yet we complain about our iPhones: one thing wrong, and you have to chuck them in the bin because they are unrepairable. The truth of the matter is this: respect breeds respect. And mutual respect breeds unity and coherence in communities. And communities that are united and close-knit, have “social capital” and hence they tend to thrive. Back to mum. Inspiration My mum is my inspiration, and with good reason: she is one of the toughest people I know. Here’s an example: when my dad passed away, my brothers and I offered to take care of all her financial needs. What did she do instead? She asked us to keep our money, and she started her own business, at 64. Watch our latest Podcast for more on this topic on YouTube @Bilalkathrada Previous Chapter | Table of Contents
Why do we fail to start things, and when we do, we often quit? What is the reason for this? Is this something written deep in our psyche? The answer is, yes. And we can overcome this fear and procrastination and achieve ANYTHING we put our minds to. Read on… In my recent podcast episode, I delved into the concept of persistence, and to get a good understanding of it, I rea dup what Freud has to say on the matter. So basically, Freud believed that there are two opposing forces inside us: the pleasure principle and its counterpart, the death instinct. Freud’s exploration of these forces sheds light on the human psyche’s intricate workings. The pleasure principle drives us towards joy and gratification. It often collides with the darker impulse—the desire for destruction, dissolution, and self-sabotage. And these two forces are at constant war inside us. But, amidst these warring forces, our ego acts as a referee, keeping them in balance: not too much pleasure, and (hopefully) not too much destructive behavior. Note: the ego I mean here is the Freudian concept of ego, which refers to the rational part of the mind, and not the ego as in “he has a bloated ego” that we use in colloquial language. Just thought I’d clear that up. Anyways, this ego needs to be trained and strengthened in order to be a good balancer between these forces. On the other hand, if the ego is weak, it will fail us. So, how do we strengthen the ego? Easy: spend 25 years in a monastery, engaging in intense Jedi training. Well no, actually. It’s much easier than that. We can strengthen the ego just as we can strengthen our muscles, by doing resistance training. See, to build muscle, we start with small weights and gradually progress to heavier weights as we become stronger and stronger. It’s the same with the ego: start with light resistance training, and slowly build up. So, what kind of resistance training can we do for the ego? The more spiritual types tell us that fasting is great for that, but there are lots of other things we can do: Meditate Develop self-awareness. Do self-control exercises (like fasting mentioned above) Do assertiveness training. Learn to take small, positive actions, rather than overthinking. Remember: it’s hard work, but it’s TOTALLY WORTH IT. Persistence is the foundation for success. It’s not your talent or intelligence that paves the path to greatness but rather the relentless commitment to press on, even in the face of adversity. Even when everyone else tell you to quit. History bears witness to this. Here’s an excellent example: Thomas Edison was expelled from school because his teachers deemed him “too stupid to learn anything.” But with persistence, he went on to revolutionize the world with his inventions. Another one: Albert Einstein, labeled as a mediocre student, reshaped our understanding of the universe with his groundbreaking theories. Today, the need for persistence rings truer than ever. In a world of rapid change and uncertainty, those who dare to persist, to adapt, and to innovate are the ones who will thrive. The concept of building trees that we will never sit under is a testament to the power of long-term vision. It challenges us to transcend the constraints of our own lifetimes and consider the well-being of those who will walk the earth long after we’re gone. It’s a call to action rooted in empathy, compassion, and a deep-seated understanding of our interconnectedness with both the natural world and each other. When we plant a tree, we’re not just investing in the present – we’re sowing the seeds of a future that we may never witness firsthand. We’re creating habitats for wildlife, purifying the air we breathe, and mitigating the impacts of climate change for generations to come. But beyond these tangible benefits, tree planting fosters a sense of community, instilling values of resilience, responsibility, and environmental stewardship in all who participate. Change or Die Someone on TikTok recently asked me if the advice I dish out actually works for me. Let me tell you, I only speak from experience, not theory. You see these white hairs? They’re earned from a life full of experiences, not all of them good. But through it all, I’ve learned one thing: change is inevitable. I found myself in a place where I wasn’t happy, and I knew something had to change. So, I made a major change. The thought of making such a bug change was scary. At some point, you’ll face the same question I did: What’s scarier: change or being left out in the cold? Do you want to take control of your life and career, or end up stranded without a job, prospects, or hope? The choice is yours. The Sunday Evening Litmus Test How do you know you need change? A friend of mine has what he calls the Sunday Litmus Test, which goes like this: check how you feel on a Sunday evening. Do you feel crappy and cringy about it being a work day tomorrow? Do you wish the morning would never come? Yes? Then you need a change. But remember, whether you initiate change or not, it’s most likely change is coming. In today’s tech-driven world, change is like the weather – it’s coming whether you’re ready or not. The real question is, how will you respond? Will you seize control of your destiny or let the waves toss you around like driftwood? Who Moved My Cheese? I know change can be scary, but there is something that can help. Ever heard of ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’ by Spencer Johnson? It’s a short, easy-to-read, fun book. It’s a book about two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two little people, Hem and Haw, navigating life’s maze. Long story short, the moral of the book is that change is like cheese in a maze – it’s always moving. Instead of fearing it, embrace it. Adaptability is key. Let go of fear, take action, and shape your own destiny. The book helped me to muster up the courage to make the change needed. I strongly recommend you read it. 4-Step Change Strategy Ready to make a change? Here’s a simple strategy that worked for me: Self-assessment: Change starts with self-awareness. Take the time to know yourself – it’s the first step towards finding your path. It will give you a good sense of who you are, what your passions are, and what options will be best suited to your personality type. Research: Once you know yourself better, the next step is to find out what is best for you. Go online, chat with folks, consult ChatGPT – the possibilities are endless. Research is key to making informed decisions about your future. Education and training: By now you’ve likely got a very good idea of what you need to do, the next step is to upskill yourself and gain all the necessary skills to enable you to reach that goal. Networking: Ready, steady, network!! Networking opens doors and connects you with like-minded individuals who can support your journey. Golden advice: DO NOT TRY TO GO IT ALONE. I understand more than most people that change is scary, but the alternative is scarier. Weigh the pros and cons, but remember, embracing change is the first step towards growth and fulfillment. Embrace it, adapt, and watch your life transform for the better. It’s time to take control and write your own story. When I worked in Johannesburg, the commute from Lenasia in the south was a daily grind, lasting 35 to 45 minutes each way. Despite enjoying my job and colleagues, the constant travel wore me down. Traffic jams and unexpected delays often stretched my commute to over two hours. Seeking respite from the urban hustle, my family and I cherished holidays in quieter places like KZN’s beaches. One beachside home particularly captivated me with its tranquil setting and stunning ocean views. Whether it’s facing unexpected obstacles, navigating through turbulent times, or dealing with personal adversity, our ability to bounce back and adapt is crucial for not only surviving but thriving. This is where resilience comes into play. Resilience is more than just endurance; it’s the art of persevering, learning, and growing stronger in the face of adversity. In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of resilience and how cultivating it can empower us to lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives. Photo by Pedro Sanz on Unsplash Understanding Resilience: What Does it Mean to be Resilient? Resilience is the capacity to withstand, recover from, and adapt to adversity and stress. It’s not about avoiding difficulties or pretending they don’t exist; rather, it’s about facing challenges head-on with courage, resourcefulness, and optimism. Resilient individuals possess a growth mindset, viewing setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than insurmountable barriers. They are adept at managing their emotions, maintaining a sense of perspective, and seeking support when needed. The Importance of Resilience in Life Navigating Challenges: Life is full of ups and downs, and resilience equips us with the tools to navigate through difficult times with grace and determination. Achieving Goals: Resilience is essential for achieving long-term goals and pursuing our dreams. This could include mindfulness meditation, journaling, creative expression, or seeking professional help when needed.
